Life in the Shadows

Today I made this photo for http://www.sndvu.nl. This is the second photo in a conceptual series in which I portray some of the foundation’s clients to show how implementing generic immigration policies in individual cases can lead to absurdity.

Life in the Shadows, shows a man from Sierra Leone who applied for asylum in The Netherlands based on Article 64 of the foreigners law. Article 64 states that he is eligible for asylum here because treatment for his severe medical condition does not exist in his home country. The Dutch government however, denied him asylum saying he’s not from Sierra Leone but from Guinea where this treatment does exist. He is now left with the impossible choice beween no treatment and therefor a short life in his home country or a long life of being an ondocumented illegal migrant in The Netherlands; a life in the shadows
